Hakan Fidan, UN Chief Discuss Global Issues
Their conversation took place on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro.
According to a statement released by the United Nations, the discussion highlighted the "strong partnership between the United Nations and Türkiye."
Fidan and Guterres shared perspectives on several pressing topics, including the conflict in Ukraine, developments in the Middle East, and forthcoming deliberations regarding the island of Cyprus.
The UN has scheduled an informal session on Cyprus for July 16-17. During this gathering at UN headquarters in New York, Guterres plans to meet with the leaders of the divided island, as well as representatives from the guarantor nations – among them, Türkiye.
The two-day BRICS summit commenced on Sunday, assembling top officials from major rising economies to deliberate on matters such as international security, institutional reforms, and collaboration across the Global South.
BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa as its core members, alongside a number of newer entrants.
Türkiye has officially applied for BRICS membership and received a special invitation to participate in this year’s summit.
