Turkish FM says Israeli violations obstruct Gaza peace plan

(MENAFN) Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan stated on Saturday that ongoing Israeli violations are significantly complicating efforts to advance the peace plan in the Gaza Strip, following high-level talks in the United States involving officials from Egypt and Qatar.

As reported, representatives from the US, Türkiye, Egypt, and Qatar convened in Miami on Friday to discuss the Gaza situation. Fidan, speaking to the press, highlighted the importance of the meeting for Gaza-focused diplomacy and described it as “perhaps after Sharm el-Sheikh, yesterday’s meeting was the most important one.” He noted that discussions continued late into the night across various formats and settings.

Reflecting on the progress of the Gaza Peace Plan launched after the Sharm el-Sheikh Peace Summit, Fidan said, “Now, since the first phase has been completed following the release of the last hostage, the parameters for moving to the second phase are being discussed.”

Fidan stressed that Türkiye had clearly communicated concerns regarding Israeli ceasefire violations. “Especially as Türkiye, we clearly stated that ceasefire violations (by Israel) are endangering the peace plan and creating major risks for transitioning to the second phase. The ongoing violations by Israel, in particular, are making the process incredibly more difficult. What we see is that all parties are in agreement on this issue, and we also had various discussions on how to prevent this,” he said.

He emphasized that a key topic of discussion was Gaza’s reconstruction. “Among the issues we discussed yesterday regarding the transition to the second phase was a preliminary study for the reconstruction of Gaza, which was presented,” Fidan noted. He underlined Türkiye’s three key principles for any work in Gaza: “First, Gaza must be governed by Gazans; second, Gaza must not be divided territorially in any way; and third, everything done in Gaza must be done for Gazans.”

Significant investment is planned for Gaza’s rebuilding, and Fidan stressed that it must directly benefit the local population. Discussions also covered potential timelines for transferring Gaza’s administration to a technocrat-led committee, the formation of a Peace Council, and parallel talks on establishing an International Stability Force.

Fidan described the meeting as “the most important meeting at the highest level since Sharm el-Sheikh” and highlighted the importance of humanitarian aid, noting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s particular concern for the issue. Drawing on Türkiye’s post-earthquake experience, Fidan said the country’s rapid completion of a housing project for 500,000 homes following the 2023 earthquake that killed 50,000 people could serve as a model for Gaza’s reconstruction.

This session marks a renewed effort by Türkiye and its partners to ensure that the peace plan moves forward despite significant challenges posed by ongoing violations.
