Turkey’s UN envoy refutes Israel’s acknowledgment of Somaliland
Speaking at an emergency session of the UN Security Council, Yildiz said the latest Israeli step once again challenges the fundamental principles of the international order. He stressed that Türkiye “firmly rejects Israel’s announcement,” describing it as a clear and serious violation of international law and the UN Charter.
“Unilateral recognition of a region that forms part of a sovereign UN member state directly undermines the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity and non-interference,” Yildiz said.
He described the decision as yet another example of what he called the Netanyahu government’s unlawful actions aimed at fostering instability at both regional and global levels, adding that such behavior cannot be normalized, ignored, or justified.
Yildiz warned that the move sets a dangerous precedent with far-reaching consequences, threatening the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia. He said it poses a blatant risk to international peace and security and could fuel fragmentation and instability, particularly in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea region.
He further argued that Israel’s recognition amounts to "an explicit intervention in Somalia's internal affairs," in Somalia’s internal affairs, emphasizing that decisions concerning Somalia and the Somaliland region must be made by Somalis alone.
Reaffirming Ankara’s stance, Yildiz said Türkiye continues to offer its full and unwavering support for the sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia across its entire territory.
